Centres United Kingdom
  Prof. Paul Emery
Personal Professor Paul Emery is based in the Academic Section of Musculoskeletal Diseases in the Leeds Institute of Molecular Medicine at the University of Leeds, UK. The unit is one of the largest clinical trial centers for rheumatic disease therapies, and has a wide range of experience of monoclonal therapy and new immunotherapy. Within his department, there are approximately 25 fellows/trainees.
Interests

Professor Emery’s department has a specialist dedicated Early Arthritis Centre, and a musculoskeletal imaging group which has state-of-the-art imaging using lunar expert densitometer (for bone mineral density), specialized high-resolution ultrasound (for soft tissue and bone pathology of peripheral joints), and magnetic resonance imaging (for soft tissue and bone pathology of both axial and peripheral joints). There are also specialized clinics for systemic lupus erythermatosus, vasculitis, scleroderma, seronegative spondyloarthropathies, and ultrasound.
There are many clinical studies of inflammatory arthritis being undertaken within Professor Emery’s department, including remission induction and combined monoclonal therapy. Experimental immunotherapy and hemopoietic stem cell replacement are a major interest. The focus of his basic research is the biology of inflammatory cells including lymphocytes, fibroblast and stem cells, both hemopoietic and mesenchymal, and the genetics of persistent inflammation.

Research
Projects

1. Outcome in very early inflammatory arthritis
2. Quality of life in patients in remission
3. Quality of life in biologics patients
4. Mesenchymal stem cell biology
5. Biology of FC-gamma receptor polymorphisms
6. Imaging of musculoskeletal conditions
7. Molecular mechanisms of non-response to anti-TNF therapy.
