  Prof. Stefano Bombardieri
Personal Professor Stefano Bombardieri is based in the Rheumatology Unit at the University of Pisa, Italy. The department currently trains 2 fellows per year in rheumatology, and offers ongoing teaching programmes in rheumatology and clinical immunology/allergology.

Interests Clinical practice in the unit is focused on systemic autoimmune diseases, arthritis, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, and osteoporosis. The unit is also a referral center for systemic autoimmune diseases. Within the unit is an inpatient clinic (24 beds), a day hospital (16 patients per day) with both diagnostic and infusional activity (anti-TNF, cyclophosphamide, prostanoids, etc), and an outpatient clinic (morning and afternoon sessions averaging 40 patients per day). In addition, there are active pregnancy, fibromyalgia, and spondyloarthritis clinics. The following instrumental analyses are performed: capillaroscopy, DEXA scan, and joint ultrasound. Areas of research include systemic autoimmune diseases, pregnancy, non–organ-specific autoantibodies and fibromyalgia. Professor Bombardieri has also participated in industry-sponsored clinical trials involving rituximab, anti-TNF, anti-IL6, and COX-2 selective inhibitors.
