Centres Czech Republic
  Prof. Karel Pavelka
Personal Professor Karel Pavelka is Director of the Institute of Rheumatology and Clinic of Rheumatology, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic. Within the department, there are 6 to 8 Fellows per year who train in general practice and rheumatology.
Interests

Professor Pavelka’s special clinical interests are osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, pharmacology, and biologic therapies. He has a large clinic for the treatment of all inflammatory diseases.
The focus of the research within his department are both in basic and clinical science. These are connective tissue diseases, myositis, registries or rheumatoid arthritis and spondylarthritides, immunology, clinical pharmacology, and genes susceptible to rheumatoid arthritis (RA), outcome measures in rheumatology, imaging and glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. The research is focused on the molecular and cellular pathways involved in the pathogenesis of several autoimmune diseases. Selected molecules, namely adipocytokines and S100 proteins, are studying for their function(s) in the joint destruction and immune response.
